A Refracting Telescope Can Expand the Universe

Outdoors No Comments

If you have even a basic knowledge of astronomy, you know that there are a number of different types of telescopes used for viewing the cosmos.  However, it is the refracting and reflecting telescope that represent the two basic types of telescope used by today’s novice and professional astronomers.   Of these two telescopes, the refracting telescope has the longest history and has been in use for centuries.   Its design was developed around the 15th century and is still a very popular telescope in the twenty-first century.  Actually, a refracting telescope is one of the oldest telescope designs still in use by today’s astronomers.

The Workings of a Refracting Telescope

The refracting telescope, sometimes referred to as a refractor telescope, consists of multiple concave lenses which allow the incoming light to be refracted, resulting in images that are brighter and larger.  These qualities make the actual images appear much larger than viewing with the naked eye.   These refractors gather the incoming light and bend it, allowing you to view objects from a distance.  This magnification is what provides you with the ability to clearly view the stars and night sky. Even though refracting telescopes look complicated, the truth is that they are basically a series of concave lenses that refract the light.

The Advantages of a Refractor Telescope

The refracting telescope has a long history, with centuries of use and design enhancement.   Over time, its design was repeatedly tested, resulting in continuous improvement of its design and magnification capabilities.  This was a real benefit providing astronomers with the opportunity to determine the refracting telescope design’s strengths and weaknesses.

The  has obviously been improved dramatically since the fifteenth century.  Even with the improvement of refractor technology, it is the size of the refractor telescope that still poses a potential concern.  As the need for increased magnification has presented itself, the refractor lens has become larger.  This can result in a larger risk of defects or sagging.

The truth is that refracting telescopes have proven themselves across the centuries and, to attest to their value, have remained one of the most popular designs among astronomers.  Regardless of the type of telescope you choose to scan the cosmos, the ongoing use and popularity of the refracting telescope provides assurance that it will be with us for decades to come.

Purchasing a Refractor Telescope

If you are like most budding astronomers, it can be confusing trying to select the best refracting telescope for the money.  But what we found was that visiting telescope and astronomy websites that provide telescope reviews can be very helpful in making your decision.  So, whether you are considering a child telescope or professional model, be sure to do your research and you will be assured of enjoying many hours of star gazing pleasure.

Keeping Up With Paintball Accessories

paintball marker

Having the A-5 paintball marker, tanks, guns, vests and other equipment complete the excitement when you plan to play paintball.  But little do others know that it is the small and simple things that count even before the game begins.  Sometimes the little accessories that are locked in a toolbox are all that are needed to complete a BPS paintball game. The lifeblood of the game is a toolbox; so if anything were to go awry there would be no reason to panic.

The gun’s manual: there are instances in the game when the gun has to undergo  “intensive surgery”.Regardless of the similarities of some, paintball guns are all different.  If that time comes when it needs to be disassembled, the manual can make it easier to put it all back together.  Try to find manuals with problem solving ideas, they really help.

Reserve batteries:  some guns require batteries to function.  It would be such a waste of time if in the middle of the game the batteries died and you could not continue to play so keep new batteries available.

Allen wrench to the rescue:  some players have either inherited their guns from their friends or bought second-hand guns.Buy a set of Allen wrenches when purchasing a gun and keep them handy.

Oil ole’!  Make sure that there is a small can of oil for the electronic paintball gun inside the box as well.  Sometimes weather dictates if the gun needs oiling; be sure to get the specific oil type recommended by the manual for the gun.

Mask lens as spare:  when worse comes to worst, mask lens’ will either become blurry or scratched.  Don’t hesitate to replace them if your vision is impaired as this really affects how the game is played.

Squeegee anyone?  Carrying one on the field is enough during a game, so why not bring a replacement if anything goes wrong?  It saves time for playing rather than looking for a squeegee.

Cupseals and reserved O-rings:  some players do not know that O-rings and cup seals can be damaged easily and this will hurt the paintball gun big time so it is a must to replace the cupseal before this happens.

And for the player, always have a neck guard around to save the neck from those disturbing shots that hit your neck.  There may be a team available to do first aid when something goes wrong but it would make sense to carry a personal first aid kit.To have a worry free paintball game, carry spare safety equipment like gloves, mask, and pads.

ATV Guides

You cannot always buy things used, for example cars, buying a used car is normally and in many cases it is ideal but for items like computers or laptops then the idea may be less than suitable.

A Hiking Trip To The Carlsbad Caverns National Park In New Mexico

Outdoors No Comments

Looked at from the outside the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico are anything but impressive and consist of a number of gray rock formations and a bit of scrub brush covering a less than impressive cliff. However, step inside and this is one of the most amazing landscapes anywhere on Earth and, with more than 100 limestone caves to explore, you can wander here for years without ever seeing the same thing twice.

The Bat Cave is not for the feint hearted and is home to of thousands of these flying mammals. The Bifrost Room will take your breath away and, named after the Bifrost bridge into Valhalla from a Scandinavian myth, the colors here truly echo those of the rainbow. The Hall of the Giants, which is the largest open chamber in the system, covers an incredible 360,000 square feet. Within all of these, and the many other rooms, you will find some of Mother Nature’s most creative work.

The Witch’s Finger, a giant stalagmite, is a corkscrew-like structure that is more than five times the the average person’s height and the Rock of Ages is even more impressive as it makes stationary rock seem to move and the multitude of outcroppings of flowstone look like a demon’s lair glowing from within.

Within the caverns you can opt for self guided or staff guided tours which vary in their degree of difficulty from easy hikes through large open spaces to scaling ten foot walls and crawling through narrow openings into large chambers.

One tour takes you through part of Lechuguilla Cave which, at more than one thousand six hundred feet below ground, is the deepest cave in America. This cave covers a total of more than 112 miles winding through the Guadalupe Mountains.

If you are not quite so active then you can travel to the Big Room by elevator which descends 900 feet and gaze up and be captivated by this 25 story high open space. You can then walk around this 1,800 foot by 250 foot room filled with incredible rock formations. You should also visit the Temple of the Sun and see the its dozens of eerily lit underground pools.

If you want to see the bats though you will need to visit between April and September as the 300,000 Mexican free tailed bats who live here fly south for the winter. A half mile hike from the entrance leads to a plateau from which you can descend the 750 feet into the Bat Cave.

And do not forget to pop on your favorite pair of waterproof hiking boots and explore the area around the caves as there are a number of fascinating things to both do and see. Despite its name, along Rattlesnake Springs you are far more likely to see dozens of harmless reptiles and birds than you are to encounter the dangerous snakes from which the place gets its name.

Another favorite with visitors is a ride along the 10 mile scenic drive through Walnut Canyon. This drive takes you along Guadalupe Ridge and the views are simply spectacular.

The Carlsbad Caverns are of course merely one of the splendid hiking areas in the United States and rank with such other great pleasures as guided hikes in Yosemite.

vacation packages

Are you planning a backpacking trip? This is indeed one of the most beautiful ways to vacation anywhere in the world. Known previously as the hobo’s style of living, backpackers’ vacation packages are now growing in popularity for obvious reasons. These trips are inexpensive, adventurous, and at the same time provide you with insights about your destination that regular tourists would take years to discover, if at all. When you go on a backpacking trip the key word is safety. In order to be safe you need to plan well and be prepared for all eventualities; this is where technology travel comes in handy.

It does not matter whether you are traveling on foot or you are vacationing at any one of the posh luxury hotels at your destination. In order to enjoy your vacation, you should always feel safe and be safe. When you are backpacking you need to pay a little extra attention to this aspect since you would find yourself many times away from immediate help. Preparedness means you should take along some of the technological gadgets available. Use technology to enhance the pleasure of your holiday. Make a list of things that you would absolutely need, keeping in mind the worst scenario possible wherever you go. Though it is always advised to travel light, ensure that your backpack has all that you would ever need in case of any emergency.

The list that you draw up should consist of hi-tech backpacking equipment that would make your trip better and ensure your safety. You should never set out without a self-charging torchlight, wind proof lighter, duct tape, cell phone (plus two additional stand by batteries), solar charger, and a Swiss knife. You should also take a backpack with wheels (if you want to breathe easy from time to time), survival equipment, a compass, a water purifier, insect repellant, a whistle, a fire starter, high energy foods and first aid kit, among others. When you think of technology travel, think of how technology can make your life easy and then go out and buy the best for your travels. This is not the place to pinch pennies since preparedness is the only thing that may stand between you and death if a mishap strikes.

There is no better way to re-ignite your love for nature than by taking a backpacking vacation. However, this mode of travel can translate into a lot of difficulty and even mortal danger. Therefore, the technology travel concept is best applied here, as you would need the best, the lightest and the smallest equipment to ensure that your travels stay fun.

Buy a Kids Telescope and Explore the Cosmos

Outdoors No Comments

If your young star gazer seems to have a fascination with the stars and planets, consider buying them a child telescope.  We are not talking about a toy or a pirate’s plastic telescope, but a real quality telescope designed specifically for novice star gazers.   Now it is important to choose a telescope that allows for optimal viewing of celestial bodies while providing a clear magnified view of your targeted celestial bodies.  A telescope that has these capabilities will provide for a more positive experience for your star gazer and heighten their interest in the world of astronomy .

What Type of Kids Telescope Should You Consider?

With fewer moving parts and a simplistic, well-crafted design, the refracting telescope design has been highly recommended by some experts as one of the best beginner telescopes.  Others believe that an easy-to-use refracting telescope is the better telescope for novices.  In making your decision, a good source of information is the telescope reviews found on many online telescope websites.  But, whatever your choice, select the kids telescope model that is tailored for new telescope users and one that can be set-up quickly and can be aligned and operates easily. While a  cannot offer custom or state of the art optics, ones from reputable manufacturers are generally quite satisfactory.  A word of warning though –  It is generally best to avoid “department store” telescopes.  These are generally of lower quality and designed for mass production at the expense of quality.

Why You Should Start with a Child Telescope

The reasons we suggest that you start on a smaller scale is that you want to avoid the frustration of attempting to use an advance telescope without training and experience. A beginner telescope will afford you with a great number of opportunities to view the stars and planets while you learn the basics of stargazing.  The cost of a kids telescope can vary from two hundred to twenty five hundred dollars, but we would suggest that you look for telescopes in the $300 to $600 price range.

So, if your novice astronomer is ready to start on their journey to the stars, take a “right”  at the Sea of Tranquility and fly yourself into deep space by visiting the Crab Nebula. Its really easier than you think, thanks to the strong magnification , precision optics and simple operating controls of the beginner telescope .

Consider Lightweight Backpacking For A More Enjoyable Holiday

lightweight backpacking

Backpacking can be a very enjoyable activity, full of fun experiences that can leave an individual with many wonderful memories, but not if all they remember is traveling with a heavy, overstuffed backpack. For traditional backpackers, toting around 30 to 50 pounds of backpacking equipment is the norm. Yet not all individuals can or would want to be burdened with all of that weight. This is why many are taking to lightweight backpacking. Lightweight backpackers travel with a considerably less amount of gear, bringing backpacking equipment down to between 12 to 20 pounds. This can alleviate a lot of stress from the body and cause a more enjoyable trip.

Individuals who enjoy lightweight backpacking are able to maneuver the trails faster and more easily than those carrying 30 to 50 pounds of backpacking equipment with them. Heavy gear can cause increased chances of having an injury, experiencing exhaustion and falling from poor foot placement. A backpacking traveler who is not weighed down with a lot of excess equipment can use their energy to enjoy the trip itself.

When backpacking hiking with less gear, simply do not take more than what you know you will need. Many people tend to pack duplicate equipment just in case, but many people never need the duplicate gear. Believe it or not, packing your everyday 12 ounce tube of toothpaste or your ultra mega bottle of sunscreen can add to the weight content of your backpack very quickly, yet you will never need those amounts of products for a weekend or even a week long trip.

Instead, try packing trial size bottles of products so that you are more comfortable when traveling. Another item that can significantly add to your backpacking weight is packing unnecessary food. This is where deliberate food planning comes in. Many lightweight backpackers have found that packing food consistent with a 2,000 calorie a day diet relieves them of a lot of weight.

This averages out to about 1.5 pounds of daily food and can actually reduce the average backpacker’s weight by over 5 pounds, in food alone. While there are other items that can be deleted from your backpack to drop weight, starting with items like these can get you off and running.

While backpacking can be very enjoyable, the weight of backpacking equipment can sometimes be a burden, making for a weary traveler on the trail. Lightweight backpacking is a way for many individuals to enjoy the activity, while not having to tote around all of the heavy equipment. Lightening the load of the equipment can cause less stress on the body and allow for a more enjoyable hike.

Guide to Buying a Camping Tent

Outdoors 1 Comment

Looking to buy a camping tent? Sure, you can go to your discount store and pick up the cheapest tent you can find. But you may be less than satisfied with it when you actually take it out to the field. When you are deciding on purchasing a camping tent, there are a few types that you should consider. First, what kind of weather are you going to be camping in? If you do a lot of cold and inclement weather camping you will probably not enjoy the 3 season tent. However, you shouldn’t have to buy an expensive 4 season camping tent if all you do is camp in summer months.

Mostly there are three different types of camping tents. The time of year and conditions the tent can be used is part of the rating for each.

All season - these are typically cabin or family tents that generally do not perform well in harsh winter weather. Generally weight does not matter.

3-season - this type of tent works well for all but the harshest cold weather condition.

4 season - made for comfort in cold climates and inclimate weather.

Most camping tents are rated for three seasons which basically mean they are not great for winter camping. Though they will cost a lot more, the 4 season tent is able to withstand harsh winter conditions. 4-season tents are typically the lightest, smallest and most expensive, used mainly for high elevation expeditions.

Considerations of what time of year you are camping must be made. Camping in a tent that is built to keep the elements out may not be very comfortable if you mostly camp in the summer. Most decent camping tents have some kind of ventilation but those made made for winter conditions also are made to keep the heat in…not let it out like a summer weighted tent. If you are camping in warm to hot weather you will be comfortable in a 3 season tent. They give more options for ventilation.

Many people are seduced by cheap camping tents. Everyone has a budget, but cheap tents may not be very waterproof. The camping tent you choose should keep out tthe rain while allowing adequate ventilation to flow through.

Camping tents can be purchased that have a water-resistant coating that still allow for ventilation. Most camping tents have a waterproof rain fly that attaches to the tent poles and still allows for ventilation. And lastly, many camping tents have floors sewn in to the bottom.
