Fly Fishing Help and Advice

Fishing No Comments

Fly fishing is considered one of the oldest types of fishing developed incipient human communities for food providing. Initially it was used especially to trout and salmon but nowadays it is also a basic method of catching marine fish as well as bass, carp, pike and lots of others. The term actually comes from the word fly that refer to the fisherman’s lure consisting of a insect-like hook made for the purpose of getting fish to bite.

The instruments necessary for fly fishing in the great outdoors are referred to as tackle, only that, when you want to be as specific as possible about the type of tools you need to add the word fly; so this is how fly tackle gets used. The structure consists of the artificial flies, the fly line and the fly rod. In order to be able to throw the fly as far as possible the line needs to be a bit heavier than other types of lines. Moreover, the artificial flies are produced in a wide range of shapes, sizes and colors, for the purpose of luring one sort of fish in particular.

Generally speaking the materials the lures are made of include hair, feathers, fur and other fabrics that render the insect look necessary for the fly to pass as bait. Each fishing location demands a certain kind of artificial fly that will resemble insects sharing the same habitat with the fish you are after. Hence, the fly fishing methods used in one region may not work in another.

Another classification of flies is that which splits them into attractive and imitative. The imitative artificial lures look like real insects while the attractive ones simply resort to color or reflection of light in order to attract fish without necessarily looking like fish prey. And yet another form of category splitting separates the fly fishing artificial lures into dry models (imitating grasshoppers, dragonflies, etc. which float on-water), sub-surface designs (looking like larvae, pupae) and wet kinds very much like leeches and minnows.

The distinction between fly fishing and sports fishing is that the former depends a great deal on the weight of the line which is cast in order to get the artificial lure to that part of the water where your fish are located, probably at a farther distance from the shore or bank. On the other hand the non-fly fishing type, rather uses the lure weight rather than the line; as this variable makes it possible for the fly to get into deeper waters when the line is pulled down from the reel.

A Refracting Telescope Can Expand the Universe

Outdoors No Comments

If you have even a basic knowledge of astronomy, you know that there are a number of different types of telescopes used for viewing the cosmos.  However, it is the refracting and reflecting telescope that represent the two basic types of telescope used by today’s novice and professional astronomers.   Of these two telescopes, the refracting telescope has the longest history and has been in use for centuries.   Its design was developed around the 15th century and is still a very popular telescope in the twenty-first century.  Actually, a refracting telescope is one of the oldest telescope designs still in use by today’s astronomers.

The Workings of a Refracting Telescope

The refracting telescope, sometimes referred to as a refractor telescope, consists of multiple concave lenses which allow the incoming light to be refracted, resulting in images that are brighter and larger.  These qualities make the actual images appear much larger than viewing with the naked eye.   These refractors gather the incoming light and bend it, allowing you to view objects from a distance.  This magnification is what provides you with the ability to clearly view the stars and night sky. Even though refracting telescopes look complicated, the truth is that they are basically a series of concave lenses that refract the light.

The Advantages of a Refractor Telescope

The refracting telescope has a long history, with centuries of use and design enhancement.   Over time, its design was repeatedly tested, resulting in continuous improvement of its design and magnification capabilities.  This was a real benefit providing astronomers with the opportunity to determine the refracting telescope design’s strengths and weaknesses.

The  has obviously been improved dramatically since the fifteenth century.  Even with the improvement of refractor technology, it is the size of the refractor telescope that still poses a potential concern.  As the need for increased magnification has presented itself, the refractor lens has become larger.  This can result in a larger risk of defects or sagging.

The truth is that refracting telescopes have proven themselves across the centuries and, to attest to their value, have remained one of the most popular designs among astronomers.  Regardless of the type of telescope you choose to scan the cosmos, the ongoing use and popularity of the refracting telescope provides assurance that it will be with us for decades to come.

Purchasing a Refractor Telescope

If you are like most budding astronomers, it can be confusing trying to select the best refracting telescope for the money.  But what we found was that visiting telescope and astronomy websites that provide telescope reviews can be very helpful in making your decision.  So, whether you are considering a child telescope or professional model, be sure to do your research and you will be assured of enjoying many hours of star gazing pleasure.

Tarpon Fishing in Key West

Fishing No Comments

The tarpon is one of the world’s finest sporting fish. Stunningly beautiful and known as the Silver King, their aerobatic antics make them a favourite of anglers worldwide. Each spring thousands of tarpon pass through Key West Harbour en route to their breeding areas and anglers flock into town in order to do battle with them.

There are many different methods for catching tarpon, the method varying depending on the type of water that you are fishing. Tarpon can be found on sand or mangrove flats and also in shallow river inlets. In this case the preferred method is either fishing a lure or a fly (with a strong fly rod. At some venues such as Islamorada the favoured style is fishing with small live fish such as herring or pilchards. The favourite fishing style in Key West is using a by-product from shrimp fishing. Let’s explain what we mean by shrimp boat trash. Lots of shrimp fishing boats ply the waters in the Gulf of Mexico and apart from netting shrimp they also catch a lot of small fish called menhaden. These are sacked up and sold as bait to the light tackle fishing boats in Key West.

The method sees the Captain cutting the manhaden into chunks and continually throwing them behind the anchored boat to attract the tarpon. The fishermen use a whole menhaden on the hook, and it is drifted back in the tidal flow down to the feeding tarpon.

The tackle recommended for Key West tarpon fishing is extremely simple. Our favourite rod for tarpon fishing is the ABU Conolon Boat, 7’9” 12-20lb test curve. It retails here in the UK for £74.99. There is also a 3 piece version of the rod (the Conolon Boat Traveller) which probably better suits the visiting angler. That version sells for £79.99 in the UK. By the way, I use that Conolon Boat rod to fish for sturgeon in British Columbia and last year caught my biggest ever fish with a length of 9ft 1inch and weighing…who knows, there was just the two of us fishing and there’s no way we could lift such a beast but I’d put it at around 400 lbs. Anyhow, back to tarpon fishing. The most popular reels for tarpon fishing are the Shimano TLD 15 or TLD 20 lever drag multipliers. The TLD 15 sells for around £80 in the UK, whilst the TLD 20 is about £15 dearer. Whatever reel you choose, it has to be super free running, because you’re trying to make your bait run down in the current at the same speed as the bait being introduced by the skipper. I prefer to use the larger TLD 20 because the larger spool spins more slowly when you are drifting your bait down in the tide plus it needs less turns to reel in when the bait has drifted as far you want. You will want the reel fully loaded with line, I go for the Ande grey in breaking strains of either 15 or 20 lbs. To the end of the line is tied a 10 foot leader of 50 lb fluorocarbon and a large circle hook. Of course all of the charter boats have prestige tackle for you to use should you not have your own.

Let’s now take a look at the actual fishing method used in Key West. Your captain will have taken you to one of the top tarpon spots, perhaps the entrance to Key West Harbour, the yacht basin, the North West Channel or maybe Bokacheeka. The boat will be anchored at the bow and if there are other people tarpon fishing, their boat will very likely be only a few feet away. The plan is that if everybody is chumming then there will be a steady stream of bait drifting down to the fish, keeping them in one big pod rather than splitting it up. The skipper will start chumming with the pieces of menhaden whilst you hook a whole fish onto your hook. There’s a particular way to put these baits on the hook but don’t worry, the captain will demonstrate how it’s done. You now let your bait drift down the current, paying particular attention to where your line runs from the spool of the reel. A bite can be quite gentle and will normally be detected by the spool of the reel suddenly running faster. As soon as you detect a bite you have to reel like hell….don’t strike !!. The beauty of a circle hook is that it seemingly hooks the fish itself if you simply tighten the line by turning the reel as fast as possible.

Once a tarpon is hooked all hell will be let loose, the fish will almost certainly jump clear of the water and it will definitely start running towards Cuba !!. Don’t forget that when playing a tarpon that if he jumps he’ll throw the hook unless you swiftly lower the rod to ease the tension on the line. This lowering of the rod is known as “bowing to the King”, and you’ll get plenty of stick from anybody else on the boat if you lose a tarpon because he jumped and you forgot to bow. If the hooked fish is of decent size the Captain will release the anchor and set off to follow the fish. It’s not unusual to unhook a fish a mile away from where it was hooked. It can be a tiring and long fight but with any luck you will eventually have the fish alongside the boat ready for a quick photo before it is safely released to fight again some other day. I remember a ‘first-timer’ fishing with us one year. He hooked his first tarpon and as it jumped he excitedly asked “how big is that” to which one wag replied “about forty minutes” !!.

Beginner Fly Fishing Information

Fishing No Comments

Often people watching television programs about fly fishing think that beginner fly fishing looks easy. As a matter of fact, what you are watching on television is not beginner fly fishing, these are professionals who have been fly fishing a long time and have worked on the techniques for many years.

Remember this is television and the chances on everything going to plan on the first take are pretty low. TV has ways of embellishing things so they look great, appealing, and easy for everyone to do, so this is where the idea that beginner fly fishing being easy comes fromt. Actually, beginner fly fishing is not easy at all so here are some great tips you will require to get started

Fly Fishing Tackle:

The fly fishing equipment you will need is a rod, reel, flies, and special fly fishing line. Lots of individuals, may their first mistake with beginner fly fishing by getting the wrong line. You’ll notice two things about fly fishing line, it’s both thicker and heavier than standard fishing line. Firstly, fly fishing doesn’t require you use sinkers or lures so there is nothing weighing the line down. Consequently the line itself needs to be weighty in order for you to fly cast it correctly. It's also heavier since you need to cast with accuracy and that's difficult to do with thinner line. Therefore make certain that for your beginner fly fishing jaunt you have the right provisions and tools to get the task finished.

Don’t Skimp:

Many people will attack beginner fly fishing with a mind to catch fish and no mind on the fly fishing equipment they will use to get the job done. Never skimp on your equipment because if you buy cheap equipment and it fails on you at the beginning of your trip then you have a long fishing trip ahead of you. Get the best reel you can afford and the best pole you can find. You can ask someone at the sporting goods store but you are better off asking someone you know that fishes because sporting goods store clerks love to see people in beginner fly fishing and try to sell them stuff they don’t need.

You can be sure that fly casting is definitely the most difficult thing to do in fishing so you will need practice. So make sure to practice casting the fly line and generally getting used to fly casting, hopefully, with time you should be come pretty successful.

Keeping Up With Paintball Accessories

paintball marker

Having the A-5 paintball marker, tanks, guns, vests and other equipment complete the excitement when you plan to play paintball.  But little do others know that it is the small and simple things that count even before the game begins.  Sometimes the little accessories that are locked in a toolbox are all that are needed to complete a BPS paintball game. The lifeblood of the game is a toolbox; so if anything were to go awry there would be no reason to panic.

The gun’s manual: there are instances in the game when the gun has to undergo  “intensive surgery”.Regardless of the similarities of some, paintball guns are all different.  If that time comes when it needs to be disassembled, the manual can make it easier to put it all back together.  Try to find manuals with problem solving ideas, they really help.

Reserve batteries:  some guns require batteries to function.  It would be such a waste of time if in the middle of the game the batteries died and you could not continue to play so keep new batteries available.

Allen wrench to the rescue:  some players have either inherited their guns from their friends or bought second-hand guns.Buy a set of Allen wrenches when purchasing a gun and keep them handy.

Oil ole’!  Make sure that there is a small can of oil for the electronic paintball gun inside the box as well.  Sometimes weather dictates if the gun needs oiling; be sure to get the specific oil type recommended by the manual for the gun.

Mask lens as spare:  when worse comes to worst, mask lens’ will either become blurry or scratched.  Don’t hesitate to replace them if your vision is impaired as this really affects how the game is played.

Squeegee anyone?  Carrying one on the field is enough during a game, so why not bring a replacement if anything goes wrong?  It saves time for playing rather than looking for a squeegee.

Cupseals and reserved O-rings:  some players do not know that O-rings and cup seals can be damaged easily and this will hurt the paintball gun big time so it is a must to replace the cupseal before this happens.

And for the player, always have a neck guard around to save the neck from those disturbing shots that hit your neck.  There may be a team available to do first aid when something goes wrong but it would make sense to carry a personal first aid kit.To have a worry free paintball game, carry spare safety equipment like gloves, mask, and pads.

Bass Fishing Guide for Beginners

If you want to learn to become a successful bass fisher, then you will need to be educated on several useful techniques and methods used by people experienced in the sport. A good beginner tip would be to not purchase a fishing boat until you learn how to fish for bass, then after your skills increase you can determine if you want to make it an on going part of your life. As a beginner it would be best to rent a boat to use during your first several fishing trips.

You can also look into the option of joining one of the many bass fishing clubs which will give you the opportunity to fish off of someone else’s boat and just pitch in toward the expenses of the day.

Choosing your Equipment

The first major step you should take in bass fishing is to choose your equipment. The first piece of equipment that you should be concerned with is your rod. Fishing rods come in a large variety of different lengths, sizes and weights, but you don’t need to be intimidated by all this or the price tag when you go to purchase your first rod and reel.

Choosing the correct fishing line weight is very important for bass fishing. It should be relatively inexpensive if you are a beginner because you are sure to make many mistakes early on. Once you have a rod and reel you will want to move on to selecting a few bass fishing lures.

There are a couple types of lures in particular, that work well for bass fishing. During the summer when it is hot the bass like going to the deeper water and there are certain baits you can use for this. Normally, prop baits tend to work best with a little bit of wind, and there are really no set rules with these lures so you can have some fun and experiment with your speed and power.

Popper baits are some of the most popular, especially with beginner anglers. Choose bright colored popper bait and then cast the line out and let it rest, then pop it back. After experimenting awhile on the amount of drop noise, you can learn to make smaller plugs with less noise, then work on the pause between each twitch of the wrist, then you will be sure to begin catching the bass of your dreams.

Bass fishing can be an incredibly rewarding hobby, one that you will really enjoy, and it is a sport that comes with a truly fascinating history. It started as far back as the 18th century and is now considered as being one of the most popular sports in the world.

Light Tackle Fishing in Key West

Fishing No Comments

The Florida Keys, that magical part of the USA that’s nearer to Cuba than the US mainland has oceans on all sides and fish galore. Keys such as Islamorada have built an enviable reputation for world-class fishing but for many years now Key West has held the reputation of being simply the best sport fishing location in North America because of the vast selection of species swimming around the island. Fishing in Key West, Florida attracts anglers from all over the world and for very good reasons.

The inshore fishing around Key West includes fishing for tarpon, permit or sharks, the reef offers snapper and grouper and offshore there’s a whole host of species including dolphin, sailfish, wahoo, kingfish, tuna and cobia. With such a variety of species and with water on all sides you’ll be hard pressed to find an excuse for a bad day’s fishing whatever the weather gods can throw at you.

Although there are a number of offshore boats operating out of Key West, our first love is light tackle fishing. If you’re not a keen angler you will be asking what I’m talking about, so let’s start with a quick explanation. An offshore boat is larger with a greater degree of luxury which might include a large air conditioned lounge and full bathrooms. They motor around the ocean towing a variety of baits behind the boat and once a fish hooks itself the designated fisher sits in a fighting chair to play the hooked fish to the boat. A light tackle boat is quite a bit smaller, normally around 26 – 30 ft long, with no accomodation and an open deck. Typically powered by a pair of powerful outboard motors, they roar around at impressive speeds which allows them to reach fishing spots many miles from the harbor at Key West. Each person on the boat is armed with a rod and reel, and when a fish bites it is up to the angler to strike and reel in the fish unaided. The offshore captains will normally operate in water at least 200 feet deep whereas the light tackle boats are much more versatile operating in water anything between 20 ft deep for sharks around the harbour to 200 ft deep offshore whilst searching for sailfish.

You don’t have to be an expert angler to fish from a light tackle boat, the captains enjoy nothing better than seeing somebody catch their very first fish. All of the skippers are very helpful and they’ll all do their best to ensure that you have a great fishing experience, and maybe a fish or two to have prepared at one of the local seafood restaurants. All of the boats have a large selection of top quality tackle for you to use if you don’t have your own gear. All that’s required from you for a great day’s fishing is sunscreen, sunglasses a hat and your food and drink for the day.

Planned future articles will describe in greater detail a day fishing for grouper, tuna, sailfish or tarpon, but for the time being we’d urge you to book a trip and catch some of our wonderful fish.

Boat Accessories Built Tough

Boating No Comments

There are a lot of Evenrude marine devices someone can mount to their water craft to help them find their way home if they become lost, help them find the fish below the water or just make touring the lake more fun.. Many of the nautical accessories developed for boating can also be found in versions for dry land, but when putting them on a vessel, the durability to withstand the harshness of watercraft life can make them a better deal

What makes boat accessories better for onboard use is their durability to withstand water spray, being bounced around during a choppy surf.

Of course, if you are only going to use the water craft when the water is smooth and have no plans to ride through the wake of other boats, marine accessories may not be necessary and less expensive models for home or motor vehicle use will most likely do the job. Although, in all probability life on the water will most likely be wet and wild and most boat owners want marine accessories to withstand the challenge.

Marine Safety Equipment

From speedometers to depth finders, there are a lot of accessories on the market. You may be interested in a interphase depth finder that will notify you if you are too close to the waters bottom. Two-way radios help boaters stay in contact with others on the shore as well as to provide communications with emergency services in the event of a problem

In addition to the above marine accessories available for safety, there are others that keep in mind the various ages of potential passengers. One of the most common boat accessories bought, is a ladder to help people climb back onboard after swimming in the water. Getting over the side can be tricky for a lot people, considering there are no footholds on the side of most boats. The ladder is removable and can be lifted while traveling and is one of the most common marine accessories available.

There are popular marine accessories to protect Your Watercraft like Dock ropes, fenders for the boat and bumpers for the dockto help maintain the appearance of the boat. By looking at any number of online or conventional boating outlets, the amount of marine accessories to be had may astonish even the most skilled boater.
